Making the CAse for Clinton's exit from Hinds County?
Being a Resident of Hinds County costs you in two ways - (1) Higher Property Taxes, and (2) Depressed Property Values.
Property Taxes: Hinds County has one of the highest tax rates in Mississippi - a full 25%+ higher than surrounding Madison and Rankin counties.
And what do we get for this premium? Better roads? Anyone who has driven these counties knows that is not the case. Better county services? A quick trip to each county’s courthouses reveals this not to be the case. Better schools? While Clinton enjoys a great separate school district, the same would never be said for the county’s schools.
Property Values: Not surprisingly, our property values suffer. The average home value in Madison County is nearly double that of Hinds - 87% more value. In Rankin County the increased value is 44%. While many factors go into a home’s value, appraisers will tell you that a significant component is the county in which the property is located. Imagine, the same home worth $200,000 in Hinds County could be worth as much as $374,000 if it were located just a few miles north across the Madison line. Even a conservative increase of only half of Rankin County’s valuation bump would result in an impressive increase from $200,000 to $244,000 - That’s $44,000 more! Or, stated another way, your property is currently worth substantially less just because it is located in Hinds County.
Car Tags: Anyone that has ever purchased a car tag in Hinds County knows the sticker shock that occurs when they get their Hinds County tag bill. Higher tax rates means paying much higher car tag costs than neighboring county residents pay. That’s a real cost that has a significant impact on every Clinton resident year after year.
If the economic cost don't have you convinced, consider this:
NO REPRESENTATION ON THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Clinton makes up 13% of the population of Hinds County and pays the highest per capita taxes, yet we have zero say in how our county is run. Our representative lives in south Jackson. A Gerrymandered district now results in the inability to elect a representative to the Board of Supervisors to protect Clinton’s interests. Not surprisingly, the Board of Supervisors now ignores us, overtaxes us, and neglects us.
INEFFECTIVE AND INCOMPETENT ELECTED OFFICIALS
Remember the recent statewide election when people showed up to vote only to be turned away or face long delays because there weren’t enough ballots at some precincts or they received the wrong ballots entirely? The role of a county election commission is simple - conduct a fair election every four years. Yet, our county election commissioners were unable to fulfill the most fundamental task of their elected roles. That is either incompetence or negligence at the highest level, and it’s just one recent example of how Hinds County elected officials routinely fail us.
CRIMINAL CONDUCT OF COUNTY OFFICIALS
Let’s talk about corruption:
-
-
-
Election Commissioner Toni Johnson – Guilty of Embezzlement
-
District Attorney Jody Owens – Currently Facing Felony Bribery and other Federal Charges
-
Interim Sheriff Marshand Crisler – Convicted on Federal Charges
And these are just the ones who got caught!
-
-
THE COUNTY JAIL UNDER RECEIVERSHIP
A fundamental role of county government is incarceration of criminals and those awaiting trial. Yet Hinds County has failed in this task so spectacularly that a federal court removed its authority to operate its own county jail.
Do You Really Believe that a Future Hinds County is Going to be Any Different?
At least 9 Mississippi counties have split and become separate counties.
The Mississippi Constitution allows county boundaries to be redrawn. All it takes is:
- Legislative Approval
- Voter Consent
- Sufficient Size
In other words—this is 100% possible, but only if we work for it.
The first step in that process will be to elect a qualified representative who will advocate for the split. I am the only candidate advocating this change.
The Consequences of Doing Nothing
If we stay in Hinds County, nothing will change.
- More Corruption.
- More High Taxes.
- More Incompetence.
- Lower Home Values.
- No Representation.
We can either continue to accept that future, or we can take control of our destiny.
I believe Clinton is and will continue to be negatively impacted by remaining in Hinds County. That is why I am running for Alderman of Ward 3. I’m the only candidate with the credentials, the experience, and the vision to make County Exit a reality.
Join Me in Fighting for Clinton’s Future
We no longer have the luxury of standing by and accepting the status quo - not if we want to protect our community. I am committed to making Clinton stronger, safer, and wealthier by fighting for our Exit from Hinds County.
But I can’t do it alone. I need your support.
I ask you to spread the word to let people know that Exit is possible and desired. I ask you to stand with me in demanding action from our leaders. And most importantly, I ask for your vote — LET’S TAKE CONTROL OVER OUR DESTINY.
Your choice in this election is clear:
- Pick a status quo candidate and accept the same results as we continue wasting money through unnecessarily high taxes and depressed property values, while being governed by incompetent and corrupt elected officials,
or
- Vote for the candidate with the vision, qualifications, experience and leadership to bring lasting change so we can reclaim control of our destiny.
Your vote absolutely makes a difference. Our Ward has approximately 5,000 residents, but fewer than 10% of those voted in the last election. As a result your last alderman was chosen by a margin of only 81 votes. In other words, if just 41 people had voted differently the entire result of the election would have changed. That’s not many people. As the only contested race in the entire city, low voter turnout is almost assured. Your vote will absolutely make a significant difference. If this issue is something you care about, I encourage you to make voting a priority on April 1st. You have a clear choice. Let’s take control of our tax dollars. Let’s once again claim a voice in our county’s government. Let’s Exit Hinds County!
